Black and Veatch recently released the 2020 Strategic Directions: Smart Utilities Report, which captures responses from over 600 utility stakeholders regarding the major challenges they face.

Overwhelmingly, utilities are concerned with regulators. Brand-new mandates for environmental sustainability, cybersecurity and physical security are driving stakeholders to adopt robust risk management solutions powered by IoT technologies. In fact, nearly half of all respondents already have a risk management system in place.

However, innovation also brings hurdles to overcome. In fact, of those surveyed, most are concerned with:

• Improving reliability 72.5%
• Asset management 49.5%
• Improving resilience 48.6%
